Quick answer

Winter is a good walking season near Uzès if you plan by the light: the sun is up for about nine to ten hours between November and February by our computation. Choose the flat loops (the Eure valley at the edge of Uzès, the aqueduct paths near the Pont du Gard), and check four things first: the river after rain, the sectors closed for nesting eagles from 15 January, the hunting notices, and whether the path you want is open.

Good for: short, flat walks, a winter day out with the truffle market, and clear light on the stone.

Not for: the long gorge loops after rain, or a start after 14:00: it is dark by about 17:00 in December.

For the routes see the walking guide and the nature guide; for the gorge, the Gorges du Gardon guide; for what else is open in winter, Uzès in winter; for the truffle season, the truffle guide; for dates, what's on.

Daylight on the 15th of each winter month (computed, local time)
DateSunrise and sunsetDaylight and a plan
15 November07:37 to 17:17About 9 h 40. A morning start leaves time for a 2 to 3 hour loop and lunch.
15 December08:10 to 17:05About 8 h 55, the shortest of the year around the solstice. Finish by 16:30 and keep the longer loops for another month.
15 January08:14 to 17:30About 9 h 15. The gorge sectors closed for nesting eagles start to close from 15 January: check the sector.
15 February07:42 to 18:11About 10 h 30. The days are visibly longer again: the best month of the winter for a longer walk.

Where to walk

Flat loops for short days

Our walking guides give two flat options. The Eure valley at the edge of Uzès is a loop of about 6.5 km and about 2 h 30 along the Alzon past remains of the Roman aqueduct (one site gives about 6.6 km and two hours; both are community walking sites, so check a map). From Castillon-du-Gard the aqueduct paths run on mostly flat tracks to the top of the bridge, with Roman remains on the way, and you can go down to the site; the grounds of the Pont du Gard guide are open every day, while its museum and cinema close for the winter.

Check first

River, eagles, hunting

The river: Gard tourism advises against the Collias loop after rain because the banks can be under water in places, and our nature guide says not to enter the riverbed in rain, storm or flood. The eagles: some sectors of the Gardon are closed from 15 January to 30 June for nesting. Hunting: the state services in the Gard set general hunting from 13 September (8:00) to the evening of 28 February 2027, by the prefectoral order for the 2026-27 season; some species have other dates. So look for local notices at the start of a path in the garrigue and ask the tourist office.

Truffles and a warm lunch

The Uzès truffle markets run on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 14 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, 7:30 to 13:00, by the tourist office, and the Truffle Weekend falls on the third weekend of January (15 to 17 January 2027 on one listing; the programme is still to come; see the truffle guide). A truffle estate on the Alès road lists a visit with a demonstration of the harvest, Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00 for 2026 to 2027; check before you go. The medieval garden is closed until 24 March 2027, and the sights of Uzès lists the rest. The dates of the markets and events this winter are in what's on.

Winter walking near Uzès

About 8 h 55 on 15 December by our computation: the sun rises at about 08:10 and sets at about 17:05. Plan to be back by 16:30.

Our nature guide says hunting takes place in parts of the garrigue in autumn and winter and tells walkers to look for local notices. General hunting in the Gard runs from 13 September to the evening of 28 February 2027 (prefectoral order for the 2026-27 season), and some species have other dates, so ask the tourist office or your host and keep to marked paths.

Not as a whole, but some sectors are closed from 15 January to 30 June for nesting eagles, the river can run high after rain, and Gard tourism advises against the Collias loop then. Check the sector and the river before you go.

The grounds and the walking paths are open every day in 2026, from 8h to midnight by the listings, while the museum, cinema and exhibition spaces close for the winter. The Pont du Gard guide has this year's closing date.
