A letter-writer's château, and an olive market

About an hour and a quarter to the north-east: the château of Grignan, tied to Madame de Sévigné and celebrating 400 years since her birth in 2026, and Nyons, the olive town with its Thursday market.

Quick answer

Grignan is about 69 km from Uzès, 1h17 by car according to a route planner, and Nyons about 82 km and 1h27. By public transport the best route to Grignan takes about 4h17 with transfers, so this is a day for a car. The château is open in November from Tuesday to Sunday and has an annual closure in January, according to one listing.

Good for: a château day, two market towns and a landscape of olive groves, in the quieter months too.

Not for: the second half of January, when the château is closed, or a Monday in the cold months.

The Drôme provençale starts north of Orange and is a landscape of lavender, olive groves and small market towns. It makes a change from the Vaucluse: Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine have their own guides, and the Dentelles de Montmirail covers the wine villages on the way.

The château of GrignanThe château is tied to Madame de Sévigné, her daughter and the Count of Grignan. 2026 is the Sévigné year, 400 years since her birth; the château site announces a new permanent visitor route on the second floor, and a press article reports ten new rooms. An exhibition, Madame de Sévigné and Fashion, runs until 31 March 2027.Hours: the listings relay the château's calendar (2 to 22 November, Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:00, closed on Monday; closed from 4 to 29 January 2027) but third-party sites differ around All Saints and Christmas. Check on the château's own page. We found nothing on the terraces.
The village of GrignanGrignan is listed on the site of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. A regional article puts its market on Tuesday mornings. The market hours: not found, so we state none.
Nyons and its marketThe Thursday market fills the place des Arcades and the neighbouring streets, from 8:00 to 13:00 in most sources. Growers sell olive oil, Tanche black olives, seasonal vegetables and fruit, cheese, bread and lavender honey. One source gives a 7:00 start. Sources differ on the years of the Tanche protected designation (AOC in 1994, AOP in 1994 or 1997), so we give no year for the AOP.

In winter

A château in the cold months

The château stays open in November and December on shorter hours and closes for most of January, and the Sévigné and fashion exhibition runs through the winter. For the other cold-month plans, see Uzès in winter.

A day

Nyons on a Thursday

On a Thursday, spend the morning in the Nyons market and the afternoon at the château of Grignan; on a Tuesday, do it the other way round and start with the Grignan market. We give no travel time between the two: we did not find one.

Combine

Add a wine stop

Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Dentelles de Montmirail are the wine stops of the Rhône side, and Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine are the Roman ones. Each is a day of its own, so choose one for the way home rather than all four.
