A note from us

Why we chose a village over a town

We considered staying in Uzès itself. The old town is beautiful and convenient. But after several visits, we found that staying in the centre is a different experience from what we were looking for — and, we think, from what most guests who come to this region are actually looking for.

The villages around Uzès offer genuine quiet. Not rural isolation, but the pace of a small limestone settlement that is not arranged around tourism. Sanilhac-Sagriès is five minutes from the Saturday market by car. It is also, at 11pm, completely silent. That combination — proximity without noise, countryside without distance — is what we were trying to find.

The property is being prepared for its first guests. But after every visit we make from the Netherlands, that same combination of access and stillness is what confirms we chose the location well. Five minutes to the market. Garrigue on the doorstep. Both at once.

The house

Old stone. Contemporary comfort.

La Valette Boutique occupies a beautifully restored 17th-century stone farmhouse in the hamlet of Sanilhac-Sagriès, in the South of France. Five minutes south of Uzès, in landscape that alternates between garrigue, vineyard and ancient stone.

The house was fully renovated with one clear intention: preserve the authenticity, bring the comfort to today's standard. Metre-thick walls, original oak beams and exposed limestone sit alongside travertine bathrooms, SMEG kitchens and hotel-quality linen.

The result is a place where you naturally slow down.

The apartments

Two apartments. One house.

Each apartment is self-contained with its own entrance, kitchen and bathroom. Together they form the entire house, ideal for groups of up to six.

La Grande Valette

Two bedrooms, up to 4 guests

35 m² of generous space. Two bedrooms, an open kitchen with sweeping views over the garrigue. The light arrives early and stays until the last hour.

La Petite Valette

One bedroom, up to 2 guests

30 m² of refined calm. Stone walls a metre thick. White linen, rain shower, silence. Everything else is outside.

Entire House

Both apartments, up to 6 guests

Take the whole house. Two private entrances, two kitchens, two bathrooms and no boundaries between the morning coffee and the evening wine.

Location

Sanilhac-Sagriès, Gard

the Gard is a quiet hamlet in the countryside south of Uzès, set among limestone hills, vineyards and garrigue scrubland. From here, Uzès is five minutes by car, the Pont du Gard fifteen, Nîmes thirty and Avignon forty. There are excellent restaurants in Uzès and enough to fill a full week without leaving the region.

La Valette makes an ideal base for exploring the western Languedoc without the noise of a tourist town.

The location question

Why stay in Sanilhac-Sagriès instead of Uzès?

Uzès is beautiful — one of the finest medieval market towns in southern France. So why stay 5 minutes outside it rather than in the centre?

The answer is what the village gives you that the town does not: quiet. Not rural isolation — Sanilhac-Sagriès is 5 minutes by car from the Saturday market — but the genuine silence of a limestone village at 11pm. The garrigue starts at the edge of the street.

In Uzès town

Walking distance to the market. Restaurant options on the doorstep. Expensive in summer. Noise from other guests and cars. Metered parking.

La Valette Boutique

5 minutes to the market. Restaurant scene 5 minutes away. Village quiet at night. Garrigue walks from the door. Free private parking.

The practical difference

Pont du Gard 15 min. Nîmes 30 min. Avignon 45 min. The village sits at the centre of a travel triangle. The same access, without the noise.
