Quick answer
Balazuc is about 71 km from Uzès, 71 minutes by car according to a route planner; Vogüé about 73 km and 76 minutes; Aubenas about 83 km and 86 minutes. There is no direct bus: by public transport a trip takes more than three and a half hours each way. Aubenas has its market on Saturday morning.
Good for: a full day by car, with two cliff villages, a river walk and a market.
Not for: a short outing or a day without a car.
These villages lie on the upper side of the river whose lower course is the canyon of the Gorges de l'Ardèche. the Aven d'Orgnac is the cave on the way, Grignan and the Drôme is the other long day to the north-east, and the Cèze villages are the nearer villages for a shorter outing.
| What | What to know | Check before you go |
|---|---|---|
| Drive from Uzès | Balazuc about 71 km and 71 minutes (1h11), Vogüé about 73 km and 76 minutes, Aubenas about 83 km and 86 minutes (a route planner, Rome2Rio). There is no direct bus: the best public-transport option to Vogüé or Aubenas combines a line 121 bus, a train and a bus and takes about 3h42 to 3h51, and to Balazuc nearly as long. La Valette is five minutes from Uzès. | A live map on the day. |
| Balazuc | A medieval village on a rocky spur above a loop of the Ardèche, one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The château is a private home, the Porte de la Sablière is the best-preserved gate of the ramparts, and the Romanesque church of Sainte-Madeleine is dated to the 11th century. The best view of the village is from the right bank, near the bridge. | The château is a private home, so we list no visit; dates of the church and the gate come from tourism pages, not from the heritage database. |
| Vogüé | Another of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, with its houses built in an amphitheatre against a limestone cliff above the river. The château with four round towers is still owned by the Vogüé family and partly listed. A railway viaduct of 1877 between Vogüé and Aubenas is now a walkway on the Via Ardèche, a greenway of about 25 km from Vogüé to Grospierres. A sand beach lies at the foot of the village. | Sources differ on the date of the château (12th or 15th century): we give none. Traffic in the village is one-way in summer, and visits, hours and prices of the château are for you to check. |
| Aubenas | The old town is crowned by the château on its limestone spur, listed since 1943. After seven years of restoration it reopened in summer 2024 as a centre for contemporary art and heritage; a self-guided visit takes about an hour to an hour and a half. The big Saturday morning market spreads through the old streets, with chestnuts and goat cheeses among the local products. | Sources disagree on the address of the tourist office; confirm the market's hours and the château's opening on the day. |
In winter
Short days, a long drive
With 71 to 86 minutes each way, a winter day leaves little daylight for the villages, so choose one village or Aubenas on a Saturday rather than all three. The cliff and river walks do not depend on a season, but the beach does.
A day
One village, one walk
On a Saturday, start at the Aubenas market and the château. On other days, spend the morning in Vogüé, with the cliff path and the viaduct walkway, or in Balazuc, with the right-bank view. We give no drive time between the three because we did not find one.
Combine
Add the canyon or a cave
the Gorges de l'Ardèche is the canyon downstream, the Aven d'Orgnac the cave on the way back, and the Cèze villages the nearer option if the drive feels too long.

A day in the southern Ardèche
According to a route planner (Rome2Rio), Balazuc is about 71 minutes by car, Vogüé 76 and Aubenas 86. There is no direct bus, and public transport takes more than three and a half hours.
Both are among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Vogüé adds the viaduct walkway, the greenway and a beach; Balazuc is smaller and is best seen from the right bank near the bridge. If you only have time for one, Vogüé offers more to do.
The château of Balazuc is a private home. The château of Vogüé is still owned by the Vogüé family and one guide describes visits, but we did not confirm hours or prices: check the official site or call before going.
