Quick answer
Viviers is about 66 km from Uzès, 1h06 by car according to a route planner, given for the Viviers to Uzès direction. A bus takes about 2h41 with a change at Pont-Saint-Esprit. We found no drive time to Saint-Montan or Montélimar, so we give none.
Good for: stone lanes and a belvedere in the morning, and a village loop with views in the afternoon.
Not for: a short outing or a day without a car.
This is the quiet bank of the Rhône: a town that has been a bishopric since the 5th century, and a village that was left to fall down and then put back stone by stone. Pair it with the Gorges de l'Ardèche, with the cliff villages of Balazuc and Vogüé, or with Grignan and the Drôme, and see Pont-Saint-Esprit for the bridge on the other side.

| Drive from Uzès | Viviers is about 66 km and 1h06 by car (a route planner, Rome2Rio, for the direction Viviers to Uzès). A bus takes about 2h41 with a change at Pont-Saint-Esprit. We found no drive time to Saint-Montan or Montélimar. La Valette is five minutes from Uzès. | A live map on the day. |
| Viviers: the old town | On the right bank of the Rhône and a bishopric since the 5th century. The Saint-Vincent cathedral, called the smallest working cathedral in France by one source, is Romanesque at the base of the nave, flamboyant Gothic in the choir and partly of the 18th century, with Gobelins tapestries. The former bishop's palace has been the town hall since 1986. | Sources give the cathedral as 11th or 12th century: we give no date. The Cité d'art label of Viviers was not confirmed, so we do not claim it. |
| Viviers: the Grande Rue and the belvedere | The Maison des Chevaliers on the Grande Rue is a Renaissance house linked to the salt merchant Noël Albert, its façade decorated with busts in medallions. The town houses of Beaulieu and Tourville there date from the 18th century. In the upper town the Châteauvieux belvedere gives a 360-degree view over the roofs and the Rhône. | Sources date the Maison des Chevaliers to the 15th or the 16th century: we give none. |
| Saint-Montan | A medieval village that was abandoned and in ruins in 1969 and has been rebuilt since 1970, by more than 9,000 volunteers according to one source. Above it stand the ruins of a feudal castle, and a pigeon tower sits on a cliff. It is a village de caractère of the Ardèche; two sources say it does not hold the Plus Beaux Villages de France label. | One rental site calls it one of the most beautiful villages of France: we use the two sources that say otherwise. |
| The Ermitage-Sainte-Baume loop | A walking site gives a loop of about 6.2 km and about three hours, with views over the gorges of the Sainte-Baume, the castle and the medieval village. | One walking site only: check the route on a map. |
| Montélimar | The town of nougat. Travel sites list the château des Adhémar, a Romanesque palace of the 12th century that is now a centre of contemporary art, with hours that change with the season. One site says Montélimar nougat has held a European PGI since 26 November 2024. The tourist office offers guided visits and free brochures. | This row comes from travel sites, not an official source: confirm the château's hours and the PGI date before you rely on them. |
In season
Spring and autumn, for the loop
The three-hour loop at Saint-Montan is most comfortable outside the heat of summer, and in a hot dry summer the Ardèche massifs have their own access rules in fire-risk weather. The town of Viviers needs no season: its lanes and cathedral suit a winter day.
A day
Town first, village after
Spend the morning in Viviers, up the Grande Rue to the belvedere, and the afternoon on the Saint-Montan loop. We give no drive time between the two because we did not find one.
Combine
Add the gorges or the cliff villages
the Gorges de l'Ardèche and Balazuc and Vogüé are the Ardèche days further west, Grignan and the Drôme lies on the Drôme side, and Pont-Saint-Esprit is the town across the river.
