Quick answer
Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is about 97 to 100 km and 1h36 to 1h42 by car from Uzès (two route planners), so this is a long day: more than three hours on the road. It repays the drive with the abbey of Gellone, the Pont du Diable over the Hérault and, in season, the Clamouse cave.
Good for: an abbey village in a protected valley, a bridge and a river, a full day of sightseeing with an early start.
Not for: a short outing, or a hot summer afternoon when the village is at its busiest.
Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is a village in the Hérault department, about 40 km from Montpellier, home to the abbey of Gellone. The valley of the Hérault around it is classed as a Grand Site de France, with five communes in its perimeter, among them Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, Aniane and Saint-Jean-de-Fos. The Pont du Diable, a bridge over the river that marks the end of the gorges, has been a listed historic monument since 1996 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. The Clamouse cave lies a few hundred metres upstream of the bridge. The village is about 1h40 by car from Uzès.

The abbey and the lanes around it
Start at the abbey of Gellone, then walk the lanes around it; the tourist office on the village square offers a guided or audioguided visit. Plan the day
Leave early, choose one or two stops
With about 1h40 each way, leave early, reach the village while it is quiet, see the abbey, and decide on the bridge and the cave on the day. If you would rather drive less, Anduze is about 40 minutes away and Gorges du Gardon and Collias only 12.
Frequently asked
A day in the Hérault valley
About 97 to 100 km and 1h36 to 1h42 by car, by two route planners. Plan more than three hours of driving for the day.
It is a long day. It suits you if you want an abbey village in a protected valley and a river, and you accept about three and a half hours of driving. For a shorter drive, the Gorges du Gardon at Collias (12 minutes) and Anduze (about 40) are much closer.
The village's own tourism page says it is a victim of its success in summer and shows its real character in spring, autumn and winter. Note that the abbey museum is listed open only from 4 April to 1 November 2026 and that no winter dates were listed for the Clamouse cave, so check before going out of season.
It is known as a summer swimming spot, but we have not found the 2026 swimming rules or water quality results. Follow the signs on site and any ban, ask the commune if in doubt, and do not take it for granted that the water is safe.
The village can be walked freely. Guided visits with the tourist office are by reservation, the abbey museum offers group visits by reservation outside its season, and the Clamouse cave is visited with a guide, so check its departure times for the day.
