When it rains, or the mistral blows

Most of the Gard is built for sunshine, but some of its best rooms are indoors: potters' studios, small museums, a Roman museum and a papal palace. Here is what is open, how far it is from La Valette Boutique, and what to avoid when the weather turns.

Quick answer

Start close to home: Uzès (5 minutes) has the Duché and the Musée Borias, the potters of Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie are 10 to 15 minutes away, Nîmes 30 and Avignon 45.

Best with children: the Musée Haribo, then the ceramics showcase in Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie.

Not a bad-weather plan: the Pont du Gard museum spaces close from 2 November 2026, and the river is no place to be after heavy rain.

Mistral days are usually dry and bright but cold and blustery, while rain here tends to come in heavy bursts, mostly in autumn. Both are good days for museums, studios and long lunches. The places below are all within an hour of La Valette Boutique, with opening days checked in October 2026 against tourism listings and each venue's published hours. Winter hours change in November, so confirm before you drive.

The weather

The mistral, and heavy rain

The mistral is a cold, dry wind from the north that funnels down the Rhône valley. It tends to clear the sky, so a mistral day looks bright and feels harsher than it looks; the local saying is that it blows for three, six or nine days. On those days, plan indoors for the morning, walk the sheltered, arcaded streets of Uzès, and leave exposed things, such as cycling on the plateau or a long terrace lunch, for another day.

Rain here often arrives in short, heavy bursts, most often in autumn. After a downpour the Gardon can rise within hours, so stay away from the river and never drive through a flooded road. Check the Météo-France vigilance map and Vigicrues before you head out.

On an orange or red alert, follow the official instructions and avoid unnecessary journeys.

Three plans

Rainy days, planned

Close to home (everything within 15 minutes). Start under the arcades of the Place aux Herbes in Uzès, visit the Duché or the Musée Borias, then drive to Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie for the ceramics showcase and, where a studio is open, a potter at work. With children, swap the Borias for the Musée Haribo.

A museum day in Nîmes (30 minutes). The Musée de la Romanité first (closed on Tuesdays from November to March), then the Carré d'Art, which faces the Maison Carrée. Both are in the centre of Nîmes and within walking distance of each other.

A grand indoor day in Avignon (45 minutes). The Palais des Papes in the morning (book online), lunch in the old town, then the Collection Lambert in the afternoon, open Wednesday to Sunday.

On a mistral day, thick-walled places such as the Duché and the museums are the most comfortable choice.

Frequently asked

Rainy and mistral days

In Uzès itself, the Duché and the Musée Georges Borias are both listed as open daily (the Borias in the afternoons), the arcades of the Place aux Herbes give you somewhere dry for a coffee, and on the edge of town the Musée Haribo is popular with children. Ten to fifteen minutes away, Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie has the ceramics showcase La Maison, Capitale de la Céramique.

On a Monday the Duché, the Musée Borias (afternoons), the Palais des Papes, the Musée de la Romanité and the Carrières de Lumières are listed as open, while the Carré d'Art and the Collection Lambert are closed. On a Tuesday from November to March the Musée de la Romanité and the Collection Lambert are closed, while the Duché, the Borias, the Palais des Papes, the Carré d'Art and the Carrières de Lumières are listed as open. Sources differ on the Musée Haribo's Mondays, so check before you go.

The monument and the riverbanks are free to walk all year, but the museum, cinema and exhibition spaces close from 2 November 2026, so after that date there is no indoor part to fall back on. Stone and gravel paths can be slippery when wet, and after heavy rain the Gardon rises quickly, so keep away from the water.

The mistral is a dry, cold wind from the north. It usually brings clear skies rather than rain, but it can make terraces, cycling and exposed viewpoints unpleasant. It tends to blow in spells of several days, so keep the indoor plans above in your back pocket and stay flexible with the day.

No. The Gardon can rise within hours after storms upstream, even when the sky above you is clear. Check Vigicrues and the Météo-France vigilance map before going near a river, and never drive through a flooded road.

They were checked in October 2026 against tourism listings and the venues' own published hours. Winter hours change in November and some listings disagree, so confirm on the day. If you find something out of date, tell us and we will correct the page.
