Quick answer
Gigondas is about 62 km from Uzès, 1h05 by car according to a route planner; Séguret is about 66 km and 1h09. The Dentelles are a small massif about 8 km long, south of Vaison-la-Romaine and west of Mont Ventoux, up to 734 m high by one source. There is no direct bus: the route planner offers a bus to Avignon, a train to Carpentras and a bus on, about 3h53 in all.
Good for: a day of wine villages with one walk, or a longer stay if you hike.
Not for: a day without a car, or one big sight; the pleasure is in the villages and the views.
The Dentelles de Montmirail are a small ridge of pale limestone in the Vaucluse, with the wine villages of Gigondas, Séguret, Vacqueyras and Beaumes-de-Venise around it. The ridge sits between Vaison-la-Romaine and Mont Ventoux; for wine, it pairs with Châteauneuf-du-Pape and our guide to wine and vineyards near Uzès.
| What | What to know | Check before you go |
|---|---|---|
| Drive from Uzès | Gigondas about 62 km and 1h05, Séguret about 66 km and 1h09 (a route planner, Rome2Rio). Beaumes-de-Venise (61 km, 1h05) and Vacqueyras (57 km, 1h07) are read from the same planner's page for the opposite direction. La Valette is five minutes from Uzès. | A live map on the day. |
| Gigondas | A wine village at the foot of the ridge. Its red wine became a cru of the southern Rhône in 1971; the appellation covers about 1,200 hectares, all inside the one commune, and white wine was added from the 2023 vintage. | Tasting-room days and hours: we found no permanent listing, so ask the tourist office. |
| Séguret | A hill village on the slope above the Ouvèze valley, about 7 km from Vaison-la-Romaine and listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. It looks over the Rhône valley, and a tourism guide names the Fontaine des Mascarons as a listed monument. | Opening times of the church or any visit: none found. |
| Beaumes-de-Venise | Known for a sweet Muscat wine made from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains; its appellation covers four communes: Beaumes-de-Venise, Lafare, La Roque-Alric and Suzette. The Romanesque chapel of Notre-Dame d'Aubune is a listed monument. | The chapel: sources date it to the 9th and to the 12th century, and one listing says the inside is closed for renovation and the access path has collapsed, so park at the foot. |
| Vacqueyras | A wine village next to Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise, and the start of a walking loop through the Dentelles Sarrasines and over the Rocher du Turk: about 7 km, 450 m of climbing and 3 to 5 hours on one walking site. | Some passages need your hands, and strong mistral makes it unwise; check a recent track. |
Walking
Pick a loop, park early
Gigondas alone has five loops of about one to six hours. The small car park at the Col du Cayron fills early, above all on spring weekends; another start is the car park of the chapel Saint-Christophe at Lafare, from where a gentler loop of about 7 km and 320 m of climbing reaches the viewpoint of the Rocher du Midi. The long round from the Col du Cayron is given as about 14 km and 600 m on one sheet and 18 km and 960 m on another, so look at a recent track.
Walking sites advise against these paths the day after rain and in strong wind; fire and hunting rules apply, so check them locally.
Wine
Book the tasting
Cellar visits usually need a reservation: one listing for a cellar at Sablet gives visits on weekdays, by appointment. Beaumes-de-Venise is the place for sweet Muscat, Gigondas for robust reds, and Vacqueyras sits between them. Whoever drives should taste little, so plan the day around one person.
Combine
Add Vaison, Orange or Ventoux
Séguret is about 7 km from Vaison-la-Romaine, so the Roman town fits the same day (see Vaison-la-Romaine); Orange is the other Roman stop to the south, and Mont Ventoux lies just beyond the ridge on the other side.
Frequently asked
A day in the Dentelles
Gigondas is about 62 km and 1h05 by car according to a route planner (Rome2Rio), Séguret about 66 km and 1h09, Beaumes-de-Venise about 61 km and 1h05, Vacqueyras about 57 km and 1h07. Plan on about an hour each way.
Not easily. There is no direct bus from Uzès to Gigondas; the route planner offers a bus to Avignon, a train to Carpentras and a bus on, about 3h53 with the changes. For this day a car is the practical choice.
A regional guide says one day covers the highlights and about three days let you know the area. From Uzès, one long day with a village or two and a short walk is realistic; a long loop is a day by itself.
Often, yes: the cellar listings we found ask for an appointment, in at least one case on weekdays only. We do not state opening days or hours, so ask the tourist office or the cellar before you drive.
