Stone, water and silence

The countryside south of Uzès is shaped by limestone, river gorges and the dry fragrance of Mediterranean scrubland. Most of it is within twenty minutes of La Valette.

The gorges

Gorges du Gardon

The Gardon has carved a deep limestone canyon between Uzès and the Pont du Gard. The gorge is part of a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve, one of the few in mainland France. The cliffs rise forty metres above emerald water that changes colour with the season and the hour. In June, the river runs clear over white stone. By August, the deeper pools turn the green of old glass.

Collias is the main access point, twenty minutes from La Valette. Kayak rental is available from April through October. The paddle downstream to the Pont du Gard takes roughly two hours and passes through sections of gorge that cannot be reached by road. There are swimming spots along the way that most visitors never find.

The landscape

Garrigue and Mediterranean light

The hills around Uzès are covered in garrigue: dense, low scrubland of wild thyme, rosemary, juniper and kermes oak. In spring, the scent is extraordinary. Walking paths cross the plateau in every direction, most of them deserted. The light here is southern, particular, and changes the landscape completely between morning and late afternoon.

Pine forests open onto limestone clearings. The ground is white, the shadows sharp. In the distance, the Cévennes mountains mark the northern horizon. This is not the manicured Provence of postcards. It is quieter, rougher, and more honest.

Hidden water

The Eure Valley and river swimming

At the edge of Uzès, the Eure Valley is a green corridor of plane trees, poplars and still water. This is where the Roman aqueduct began its fifty-kilometre journey to Nîmes. The source is modest, almost hidden, but the walk along the valley floor is one of the most peaceful in the region. Bring a picnic.

For swimming, the Gardon below the Pont du Gard is the obvious choice: a broad riverbed under the Roman arches, shallow enough for children on the edges, deep enough to swim in the middle. Less obvious are the pools upstream near Collias and the quieter stretches east of Remoulins.

Vineyards and seasons

The land through the year

The vineyards of the Duché d'Uzès appellation surround the town. The vines share the landscape with olive groves and truffle oaks. In autumn, the colours shift from green through gold to the deep red of garnet. Winter brings bare vines and frost on the garrigue. Spring is wild and sudden: poppies, irises, orchids along every path.

The best months for nature are April through June and September through October. Summer is hot and dry, magnificent in its own way but best experienced in the early morning or the hour before sunset when the limestone glows amber.
