Quick answer

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the wine village north of Avignon, is about 44 km and 50 minutes by car from Uzès (route-planner figure). Come for the ruined château above the vines, a walk through the lanes and a tasting at the appellation's wine house or at an estate.

Good for: a relaxed day with wine, a view over the vineyards, combining with Orange or Avignon.

Not for: unplanned tastings at every estate (some ask you to book) or driving after a tasting.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a village in the Vaucluse that gives its name to one of France's best-known wine appellations. The appellation dates from 1936 and covers about 3,200 hectares; Grenache is the most planted grape, and the rules allow thirteen varieties (eighteen if the colour variants are counted separately). Above the village stand the ruins of the château that the popes of Avignon had built in the 14th century. It is about 50 minutes by car from Uzès.

The village

Ruins, lanes and vines

Walk up through the lanes to the ruined château: the view covers the vines and the Rhône. The village is small, so an hour or two is enough for the ruins and the lanes, which leaves the rest of the day for tasting.

Tasting

How to taste without stress

Start at the wine house to compare several estates in one place, then choose one or two estates and book them. Eat at midday, drink water between wines and spit if you are driving. A long lunch is part of the day.

Orange or Avignon

Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies between Avignon and Orange. Add the Roman theatre of Orange (Orange) or the Palais des Papes in Avignon (Avignon); both are a short drive away. For the vineyards close to home, see our guide to wine and vineyards near Uzès.

Frequently asked

A day among the vines

About 44 km and 50 minutes by car, by route-planner figures. Without a car it takes almost three hours with two buses, so a car is the practical way.

It was one of the first French appellations, recognised in 1936, on about 3,200 hectares. Grenache is the most planted grape, and the rules allow thirteen varieties (eighteen if the colour variants are counted separately), so blends differ between estates.

Not always, but it is safer. The wine house mentions a free tasting without saying clearly whether a booking is needed; the museum's guided visits with a sommelier are paid; and some estates ask for an appointment. Call ahead.

Yes: the village lies between them, a short drive from each. A morning in Orange and an afternoon tasting, or the reverse, makes a full day; our guides to Orange and Avignon give hours and tickets.
